Why I don’t do valentines…

You would expect this sort of post to be coming from a bitter single person but no… I am happily engaged and STILL do not celebrate valentines! “But why?” you ask and the simple answer to that is…. because it’s stupid! But of course I will elaborate.

Although there is some wishy washy story of saint Valentinus for which the day is named, Valentines is basically a day made up by consumerists in order to suck money from the needy.

Let’s think about this logically, Valentines day – as it is celebrated today – is a day in which you are forced to show affection to your other half in the form of chocolates, flowers, dinners, diamonds and whatever else you can think of. It is also a day in which single people want to fall into a pit of Ben and Jerry’s or get mauled by Alsatians (much like the scene in Bridget Jones.)

Why on earth are we celebrating this? Why are you so happy that your partner has bought you a gift purely because the day tells them to? Surely it would be more romantic if they surprised you with gifts on a random day… I mean I’m all for that cause at least it’s legit.

I love my fiancé every day! I buy/make him cards for random occasions, I’ll buy him chocolate just because, I even made him a certificate when he was top goal scorer on Fifa! (I know right, major girlfriend points over here!) This is what we should be doing, we should be appreciating each other “just because” – I guarantee this will get a more sincere reaction. The art of the unexpected gift is a powerful thing.

You’re probably asking yourself whether I celebrate any other special occasions given that these are also, technically,  “forced”… here are my thoughts:

Birthdays – yes, you are celebrating the day you graced the earth with your presence and as you are so bloody awesome it is customary to partay!

Christmas – yes, although I am not religious I enjoy Christmas purely because it is the one time of year families and friends make a real effort to spend quality time together. (And OBV all the food!)

Anniversaries – yes, you are remembering an amazing time. The time you met, the time you got married, your first date. I’m all for this – I love to reminisce.

Halloween – ALL DAY ERRY DAY… basically any excuse to dress up, in fact all hallows eve in my number one babe!

But this is pretty much all I celebrate.

I do not believe in a day that makes me buy stuff and give forced affection. I do not believe in a day that ostracises the single making them feel bad because they don’t have a significant other. I do not believe in a day which makes going out to a restaurant SO BLOODY DIFFICULT and full of sickening couples sharing desserts and holding hands across the table – don’t act like you don’t want your own dessert, you’re not fooling anyone my friend.

So this may seem like a cynical, bitter post but so be it! I am not ashamed of my distaste for valentines. In the same breath I do not judge those who are all over it … that’s your perogative (as Britney would so wisely say.)

As a side note however I do have to admit that I usually make Jon a valentines card MAINLY to give a giant middle finger to the card companies like; “oh you promote this day so that I will get sucked in and buy your cards??? JOKES ON YOU!!! I made my own SUCKAAA.” They used to be really extravagant and full of printed out pictures but the longer we are together the more sarcastic they get. I’m pretty sure last years was “I cant wait to get old and fat with you.” I have a great idea for this years one though so keep your eyes on my insta!

So if you do not get anything from your other half for Valentines day, don’t hate on them for it. If you don’t have a partner for Valentines day, who cares? It’s just another day! Do whatever you would usually do 🙂

Peace and love xoxo

Haha, love the certificate for Fifa!!! That is top fiance points 🙂

Totally agree, I don’t do Valentine’s either. A card – that’s it! Though that one you posted from The Simpsons must be the best one ever?!! <3

I swear Valentine's just depresses single people and irritates people in relationships. Bah humbug!! Or the 'valentine's' equivalent anyway!!!

Yeah hahah I made Jon that card a couple of years ago and cracked myself up!! lol x

I would say I hoped he made “Let’s Bee Friends” for you back but of course that wouldn’t be too appropriate!!!! xxx

I’m a bit on the fence with Valentine’s Day haha! I used to hate it but now that I’m engaged I KINDA like it. We don’t make a huge fuss, we just buy each other a cheap card and maybe go out for dinner (although never on the actual day because ain’t nobody got time or money for that). We just use it as like a date night, but it’s what we do once a month anyway, so it’s not really special apart from a card!

      Yeah lol that’s fair enough!! 🙂 x

I do feel it is very over rated. I do buy a card but we don’t bother with gifts, we tend to buy gifts and surprises for each other all throughout the year. Although I will admit to buying some of the Valentines merchandise in stores, purely because I like it and will most likely use it all year round, and I do put up decorations, I love any excuse to mix things up at home with themed decorations haha (so OK, maybe I’ve been sucked in just a little bit) x x x

Haha! I do love the valentines range for most things like kitchen stuff and stationery but for life in general rather than as a gift xx

I do agree with this, it is a very commercial day. But I would still somehow get offended if Luke didn’t give me his last rolo. Women… Just cant win. lol xx

Haha! Are rolos even still a thing? Haven’t seen them in ages x

This is weird because I feel the same way about Christmas that you do about Valentine’s Day: there’s so much pressure to be nostalgic and “cozy” and “merry” and it’s a competition to buy the best things to prove you love your friends and family and I hate it. It makes me anxious and resentful to the point where I struggle to enjoy anything outside of Christmas music. I like Valentine’s Day more because it’s more under-the-radar: buying a friend a gift is a genuine welcome surprise (as opposed to the obligation it is at Christmas). My High School BFF sent all her friends lavish and goofy Valentine’s presents and it was the greatest thing ever. I’ll never forget how that act of fun and friendship made me view the day in a different light. You know I’m going to wish you Happy Valentine’s Day now, but you can choose to celebrate the day after instead, when all the lavish chocolate boxes go on sale to clear the shelves for Easter eggs 😉

Aw that sounds lovely! That is a great point and my friend once sent me a valentines card full of heart confetti that was so cute but i think it was cause it was unexpected which is the point I was making where as something from a partner is more forced and expected and therefore not as special if that makes sense? I know what you mean about Christmas! I just like the fact that I get to see family and friends that I don’t usually get to see like I enjoy meeting up for dinner and drinks rather than the present side of things although I love buying gifts for other people for any occasion I just think valentines is a bit of a made up nothing day lol xx

This is exactly how I feel about Valentine’s too, I wrote a similar post last night in fact to schedule for the end of the week haha I do think it can be a great excuse to get together with friends and do something nice though, or a time to show family some love!

Oh really!! Haha great minds 🙂 pop me over a link when it goes up!! @laurabutcher91 on Twitter would be easiest 🙂
Yeah that’s true I mean any excuse to spread the love but I think some people get a bit obsessed with it like its a super important day and I really don’t get it? X
